What war in Syria looks like: journalist killings, deadlier IEDs

Whatever restraint that was being exercised by the parties to Syria's civil war appears to have been cast aside.

Events in Syria are rapidly unraveling. Earlier today President Bashar al-Assad abandoned his claims that the regime was merely fighting terrorists sent by foreign powers to destabilize Syria and said the country is in a "real state of war." Today some of the war's heaviest fighting near Damascus took place and a pro-Assad television station about 12 miles south of the capital was overrun by rebels, who killed employees there.

While Mr. Assad's military has fought ferociously to put down the rebellion, using the heaviest mortars in the world and launching artillery barrages on majority Sunni towns like Hama and Homs, there has been some restraint. So far there has been no repeat of the Hama massacre of 1982, when Assad's father and predecessor, Hafez al-Assad, leveled much of that city to put down an Islamist uprising, killing more than 10,000 Syrians.?

The younger Assad's acknowledgment of the war around him today signal a turn to more ruthless tactics. If that happens, it will be against an armed opposition that has steadily grown more lethal in recent months, with arms paid for by the Sunni monarchies of Saudi Arabia and Qatar flowing to the rebels, an increasing tempo of attacks on government security forces, and an increasing adoption of the tactics that Sunni insurgents employed with devastating effect against US forces and their allies in the war in Iraq. At the moment, both sides see the total destruction of the other as the way to end the war.

An international meeting is scheduled in Geneva for this weekend at which world powers will discuss Syria. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says she has "great hope" for a positive outcome. But with Syrian ally Iran excluded from the talks and Syrian enemy Saudi Arabia, which is backing the rebels, not expected to attend, she will probably be disappointed.

Syria was a major entry point for foreign jihadis into Iraq during the height of the war there, and it was presumed that Assad's regime turned a blind eye to the Syrian, Egyptian, and Libyan fighters passing through his territory. After all, the US had been grumbling about regime change in his country, so anything that kept US troops tied down next door was to his advantage.

But veterans of the Iraq conflict have now joined the fight against Assad, who is a member of the Alawite sect ? an offshoot of Shiite Islam whose followers are viewed as apostates by Sunni fundamentalists. The Alawites are a minority in Syria, but they have dominated senior government positions and the military officer corps for decades.

Among the techniques deployed by insurgents are improvised explosive devices (IEDs) against government convoys. Roadside IEDs generated most of the US casualties in Iraq, and though solid data is hard to come by, they're probably responsible for most of the more than 400 Syrian military deaths reported by the government so far this month.?IEDs are popular among insurgents because they're cheap to make and are less risky to deploy than direct assaults on heavily armed regular troops.

There are also indications that the bombs are increasingly sophisticated. The Brown Moses blog, which aggregates news about Syria's war, points out growing reports of the use of explosively formed penatrator IEDs in Syria, which penetrate further than regular IEDs.?David Enders reported earlier this month that some rebel groups have acknowledged to him the growing presence of EFPs in Syria.

The weapon amounts to a curved copper cap fixed over the explosives in the bomb.?The explosives hit the copper cap, forcing it into a fast-moving slug of metal than can penetrate armor.

?They are hard to get and expensive,? a young IED maker complained to Enders, who wrote the "former university student [spends]?his days making bombs with fertilizer, mostly by packing it into empty cooking-gas containers... for targeting tanks, he packs truck axles cut in half full of explosives."?

In Iraq, senior US officers complained that Iran was providing the insurgents with EFPs. But workshops for the construction of the bombs were also found inside the country, and it's axiomatic that the longer a war drags on, the more technically proficient local insurgents become in the manufacturing of bombs. In the case of Syria, Iran is an ally of the Assad regime. There are also indications of workshops to build the explosives inside Syria, as this video purports to show.

The assault on the pro-Assad TV station this morning is also a reminder that it's not just civilians on the rebel side that are being killed in the expanding war. At least three people were killed in the assault on the Ikhbariya TV station and there were claims that the rebels took hostages, although this has not been confirmed. Supporters of the uprising said the attack was appropriate, since Ikhbariya is a government propaganda outlet.

Propaganda is indeed a major part of the regime's survival effort.?But when foreign journalists Remi Ochlik and Marie Colvin were killed in a government artillery barrage on a rebel-held section of Homs earlier this year, there were howls of outrage from the opposition. The two were part of a group traveling with the rebels, staying in a flat that amounted to an information hub for the local uprising. The information war cuts both ways, and is due to continue.

From a tactical perspective, the ability of rebels to strike at a major regime symbol so close to Damascus could signal real trouble for Assad ? if they manage to follow up with further assaults. While there have been few signs of the regime crumbling from within, there have been reports of more defections?in recent days. A loss of control of routes into Damascus would increase the pressure on Assad and plant seeds of doubt among more of his supporters ? something he will fight desperately to avoid.

I covered the Iraq war for five years, at the height of the sectarian war between Sunnis and Shiites. Syria, with its ruling Alawite minority and majority Sunni population, already seems pointed down that ugly road. The below video purports to be of successful rebel IED attacks on government forces, practically indistinguishable from the sort of propaganda that Sunni insurgents issued about their attacks in Iraq.

NASA measuring Tropical Storm Debby's heavy rains from space

Tropical Storm Debby continues to be a big rainmaker in Florida and southern Georgia and NASA's TRMM satellite has measured those rainfall rates from space, showing where heavy rain has fallen.

The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite is basically a flying rain gauge in space. Scientists use TRMM data to calculate rainfall rates and rain totals from space. TRMM imagery from June 25 showed Debby's heaviest rains were falling at a rate of over 2 inches (50 mm) per hour, and to the southeast of the center.

Debby has been a huge rainmaker. For example, Debby dumped nearly 7 inches of rain on Gainesville Sunday, June 24. That was Gainsville's second highest one day total. Numerous other reports of between 6 and 10 inches of rain have already been reported as a result of Debby.

Debby's Status Today:

Today, June 25, 2012, a tropical storm warning is in effect for the Florida Gulf coast from Mexico Beach to Englewood. At 8 a.m. EDT (1200 UTC), Debby had maximum sustained winds near 45 mph (75 kmh). It was still centered in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico, about 85 miles (140 km) west of Cedar Key, near 28.9 north latitude and 84.5 west longitude. The estimated minimum central pressure is 991 millibars. Debby is slowly moving toward the east near 3 mph (6 kmh) and is expected to move east-northeastward in the next couple of days, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC). NHC forecasters note that Debby's center will weaken to a depression while moving over northern Florida in the next day or two.

Debby's History:

Tropical Storm Debby formed on the 23rd of June 2012 in the central Gulf of Mexico, becoming the earliest 4th named storm on record. Debby began as an area of low pressure that moved out of the northwestern Caribbean and into the Gulf. After forming on the afternoon of the 23rd, Debby has moved very slowly under the influence of weak steering currents.

Debby drifted ever so slowly northward on the night of the 23rd before turning northeast later on the morning of the 24th towards the northeast Gulf Coast of Florida. Despite its slow forward progress and lack of intensification, Debby has already lashed Florida with heavy rain as well as tornadoes.

What TRMM Data Reveals:

The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (or TRMM) satellite captured an image of Debby when it passed over the storm in the north central Gulf of Mexico on the morning of June 24 at 11:51 UTC (6:51 a.m. CDT). TRMM revealed that most of the rain associated with Debby is well away from the center. A large area of moderate rain north and east of the center extends from near Tampa Bay all the way around to near Panama City. A large band of intense rain lay just off shore, while light to moderate rain covered a broad area of the Florida peninsula.

How Rainfall is Mapped:

Data from several TRMM instruments are used to create rainfall images at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. Rain rates in the center of image swaths are from the TRMM Precipitation Radar (PR), while those in the outer swaths are from the TRMM Microwave Imager (TMI). The rain rates are then overlaid on infrared (IR) and visible data from the TRMM Visible Infrared Scanner (VIRS). TRMM is a joint mission between NASA and the Japanese space agency JAXA.

Coastal flooding and the potential for isolated tornadoes are continuing threats today. The storm is also expected to continue to bring very heavy rains to northern and central Florida where some areas could see in excess of 20 inches of rain. Storm speed is what matters most when it comes to rainfall; the slower the storm, the more time it has to rain over a given area.

Roy Nelson challenges Mike Russow to a win or leave (the heavyweight division) bout

In a heavyweight division of the UFC filled with fighters who are built like a Greek god, Roy Nelson and Mike Russow don't exactly fit the mold.? After watching Fabricio Werdum knock out Russow at UFC 147, Nelson was struck with matchmaking inspiration.

"I want Mike Russow and loser goes to 205 or becomes Dana White Rich. Let make it happen @danawhite," Nelson tweeted.

Both men appear to carry more body fat than most of their counterparts and look like they could cut down a weight class. They also both have recent losses to Werdum, as Nelson dropped a decision to him in February.

This isn't the first time Nelson has contemplated a drop down. In March, he said he would try to get to light heavyweight if he added 100,000 Facebook likes. However, he abandoned the plan when he was booked for the all-heavyweight main card at UFC 146.

A drop for Russow, who weighed in at 246 pounds for UFC 147, may be a bit more difficult than for Nelson. In addition to being a pro fighter, he is a full-time officer in the Chicago Police Department. He doesn't train full time, like Nelson does.

Of course, the difficulty in dropping down would also give Russow more motivation to win the fight. Do you want to see this fight? Speak your mind in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Former RIM CEOs get combined $12 million

Justin Sullivan / Getty Images file

Mike Lazaridis' generous compensation package is raising eyebrows.

By Martha C. White

Getting paid handsomely for a job well done is one thing. But receiving ultra-generous generous while your company is sinking? That's another matter altogether.

An SEC filing disclosed that Research in Motion (RIMM) gave its departing founders and co-CEOs a combined $12 million in compensation for its latest fiscal year, even though they were relieved of their executive duties in January.

Yes, Mike Lazaridis and James Balsillie "revolutionized the worldwide wireless industry with the introduction of the BlackBerry and forever changed how the world communicates," as the filing stated. Unfortunately for RIM, the world today communicates mostly on iPhones and Android devices, a turn the two former chiefs failed to navigate.

Today, the Blackberry manufacturer's market cap, at a bit over $5 billion, is only around 6 percent of its 2008 high and its stock price is struggling to stay above $10. The two CEOs were replaced by former COO Thorsten Heins in January, who has indicated a willingness to consider any and all options to salvage the company.

Nevertheless RIM paid Balsillie nearly $8 million, including nearly $5 million in severance, while Lazaridis got $4 million, according to All Things D.

Multimillion-dollar paychecks for top executives seem discordant when shareholder value is evaporating, but compensation experts say the link between executive pay and performance has weakened even as the size of those compensation packages skyrockets.

"The connection between performance and pay is getting more and more attenuated," said?Kent Greenfield, professor at Boston College Law School.?

According to the AFL-CIO's annual survey on executive compensation, CEO pay at companies in the S&P 500 rose nearly 14 percent in 2011 to an average of $12.94 million.

There is somewhat of a herd mentality among the compensation committees on corporations' boards that are responsible for executive pay, which is a contributing factor to the disconnect, Greenfield said.

"They'll take a look at what competitors are paying their executives and peg their compensation above the average," he said. Since everyone wants to be above the middle of the bell curve, the result is an ongoing inflation of pay packages, Greenfield said. "They think these CEOs are like Lebron James."

When a company is performing well, benchmarking against what competitors pay makes sense, especially in the tech industry, where only a small pool of people have the vision and skills to turn evolving ideas into revenue.

"In order to attract the best talent, companies have to be willing to pay," said?Geoff Hoffmann, COO at executive search firm DHR International. "Sometimes it works out, other times it doesn't."?

Barry Reiter, senior partner at law firm Bennett Jones LLP, said there are varying degrees to which companies try to make compensation committee members act in shareholders' best interests. "Some of the better companies have the requirement that ... a lot of what they get paid for the first few years is plowed into the stock," he said.

Board and committee members can sometimes have their own priorities, though. "It's a networking thing, it's a prestige thing," Reiter said. "It tends to be an important thing to the people who do it and that sort of is a thing that undercuts the notion of independence even if you have no other ties to the company." If a CEO has a lot of influence over member selection, those directors could be motivated to approve higher compensation.

This financial arms race has broader consequences, Greenfield warned. "It's harmful for the economy," he said, pointing out that outsized pay packages for executives at troubled companies come at the expense of employees and shareholders. "A?democracy can't survive when there's such extraordinary inequality," he said.??

A research paper by?Emmanuel Saez, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley,?found that 93 percent of income gains in the post-recession recovery went to the wealthiest 1 percent. In 2010, income for the top 1 percent grew nearly 12 percent. For everyone else, the income gain was only 0.2 percent. "We need to decide as a society whether this increase in income inequality is efficient and acceptable," Saez wrote.

Kleiner Perkins Files Legal Response To Gender Discrimination Suit ...

Kleiner Perkins today filed its official legal response to the gender discrimination and retaliation lawsuit that one of its partners, Ellen Pao, filed against the storied Silicon Valley venture capital firm last month.

Today was the last day that Kleiner could have filed its legal response to the claim, so the timing is not exactly a surprise.

The filing makes the firm?s position clear in its first paragraph, which reads:

?KPCB generally denies each and every material allegation of the Complaint and further denies that [Ellen Pao] has been damaged in the manner alleged, or in any manner or amount. KPCB vigorously denies that it discriminated against Plaintiff, retaliated against Plaintiff after she complained about harassment or discrimination, or that it violated its obligation to take reasonable steps to prevent discrimination from occurring.?

The filling goes on with detailed rebuttals to each of Pao?s claims. Here are some of the key points made in Kleiner?s response:

  • KPCB denies that Ellen Pao ever complained to the firm about the alleged sexual harassment she claims to have been subjected to while working there. The first time the firm became aware of her complaints, it says, was in late 2011/early 2012.
  • Once Pao did come forward with her complaints, Kleiner says it engaged an outside investigator who found the claims to be without merit.
  • As for Pao?s assertion that longtime Kleiner partner Ray Lane pressured her to drop the suit and marry her alleged harasser, Kleiner Perkins categorically denies all of those claims. The document also says that Pao ?thanked Lane for his help and understanding? and that all they?d heard of the incident until recently was Pao?s ?expression of gratitude and desire to move on.?
  • Kleiner also categorically denies Pao?s assertion that she was also the victim of harassment by partner Randy Komisar, who allegedly gave her a book of poetry and asked her out for dinner. In this case, KPCB says that the book was actually a gift to Pao from Komisar?s wife, and that Pao ?has twisted facts and events in an attempt to create legal claims where none exist.?
  • The filing also details negative feedback Pao has received during her employment at Kleiner Perkins. Those performance criticisms, Kleiner says, were the only reason that she was ever passed over for promotion ? not her gender, nor her sexual harassment claims. ?Any failure by Plaintiff to advance was caused by her own performance failings, and any emotional distress suffered by Plaintiff likely occurred as the result of turmoil in her personal life,? the response says.
  • Kleiner Perkins also addresses Pao?s claims that gender discrimination at the firm is widespread. The firm denies Pao?s claims that it excluded women from dinners, ?or that any KPCB event was marred or motivated by gender animus or discrimination.?
  • Kleiner also says that the fact that Pao has filed a suit in court at all is a breach of her employment contract, which included non-disparagement and arbitration agreements. ?Plaintiff has sued in the incorrect forum and her claims, which she has contractually agreed to submit to arbitration, must be asserted in an arbitration forum, contractual agreements which she has now breached.?

Kleiner is asking the court to dismiss Pao?s complaint with prejudice, that judgement be entered in favor of Kleiner on all claims, that Kleiner be awarded its attorney fees and other costs pertaining to the suit, and any other relief the court deems proper.

Sears launches New Baby Department across Canada

RBR Staff Writer
Published 04 June 2012

Multi-channel retailer Sears Canada has launched the ?New Baby Department? in the Kids Room at Sears in 55 stores across Canada.

Sears Canada The Kids Room vice-president Tracy Culleton said the New Baby Department is organized into five categories that are clearly signed: nursery, travel, activity, feeding and gifting.

"The signing also provides all the features and benefits of the product assortment. Another new introduction is 'take-with' inventory; when customers are shopping for cribs, strollers or car seats, Sears now stocks these in store so that they can be taken home on the same day," Culleton said.

Sears Canada network includes 196 corporate stores, 278 hometown dealer stores, 29 home services showrooms, over 1,500 catalogue and online merchandise pick-up locations, 105 Sears Travel offices and a nationwide home maintenance, repair, and installation network.

Russell Brand Plans Some Movie Awards Lady-Killing

Charlize Theron and Kristen Stewart are definitely on our newly single host's radar for Sunday's show.

When it was announced that all-around funnyman Russell Brand was hand-selected to host the 2012 MTV Movie Awards, no one was more excited about the news than Brand himself — particularly when we presented him with a list of the lovely leading ladies who would also be present at Sunday's show.

When we let him know that Kristen Stewart, Emma Stone, Mila Kunis and Charlize Theron would all be on hand, there was a lot of whistling on his part.

"I don't watch things like ['Twilight']," Brand said when Stewart was mentioned, but he did offer up a nice whistle. "I don't know, I don't know why I would watch it. But for the people, I like the good-looking boys. Robert Pattinson and him with the tummy," he said, speaking of Taylor Lautner's storied abs. "I met him. He was really handsome."

Brand's tales of celebrity run-ins did not end there: It turns out the "Rock of Ages" star had a very memorable encounter with Stewart's "Snow White and the Huntsman" co-star, Charlize Theron.

"Oh my God. She's amazing, isn't she? [I met her], and it was embarrassing," Brand revealed. "I messed it up bad. I met her and didn't recognize her. I was at a party, and I was looking at birds. She came over and [said] something untoward. And I showed off like an idiot, not recognizing her."

Once Brand realized his mistake, he was distraught.

"I thought, 'Oh no! I didn't use any of my moves!' " he recalled, before adding that Sunday's awards show might present him with the perfect opportunity to reintroduce himself. "It's a new day, it's a new dawn, it's a new life," he said, wondering, "Is she single?"
