Towson University greets St. Francis for Homecoming 2012 showdown

Towson University is hosting St. Francis (Pa.) University at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, as the Tigers' homecoming game at Unitas Stadium in Towson.

Towson is coming off a 20-17 win over William & Mary in their Colonial Athletic Association opener last week, which was also at home.

The game will also be aired on the Tigers' web site, http://www.TowsonTigers.com with Spiro Morekas and Ron Meehan calling the action. The Tigers' internet broadcast also features a one-hour pre-game show.

The Tigers are hosting St. Francis for homecoming for the second time. In 1996, Towson celebrated homecoming with a 54-14 win over the Red Flash, according to Towson Athletics Media Relations.

A member of the Northeast Conference, St. Francis is 1-2 coming into tonight's game.

Towson lost its first game of the season against Kent State in a road game, then made its Colonial Athletic Association debut with a 20-17 victory over William & Mary. In that game, the Tigers dominated the time of possession and had 422 yards of total offense.

Sophomore running back Terrance West, a pre-season All-American, ran for a season high 153 yards on 27 carries. Averaging 92.0 yards per game, he is the second-leading rusher in the CAA, according to Towson Athletics Media Relations.

The Tigers' senior quarterback, Grant Enders, has thrown for 421 yards and rushed for 86 yards in the Tigers' first two games. He has completed 42 of 57 passes and ranks second in the CAA with 507 yards of total offense.

The Tigers, who won the 2011 CAA championship and earned a berth in the NCAA FCS playoffs, are facing St. Francis for the third time. Towson owns a 2-0 series lead.

Saturday's game is the second of three non-conference games on the Tigers' schedule. Towson plays its final non-conference game of the season at Louisiana State next week ? a game that will be televised on ESPNU.

Family Fun: Trivia Night : Ideas for Women Home and Family Blog

Having a trivia night can be fun although if you have small children this my be difficult. You can include smaller children by having prizes for the winners to choose from and allowing the smaller children to hand them out. You can even allow the smaller children select the prize for the winner. These?prizes?don?t have to be anything expensive in fact a few dollar items will work.

Decide what sort of questions will be asked, if you will on teams or not and the basic rules. You can even purchase a board game such as?Jeopardy?or Trivial Pursuit. Both of these have everything you need to play and you can even purchase just the trivia cards from the games and create your own rules. Maybe set up small tv tables for the players to stand behind and give each one a little bell to ring when they know the answer.

The idea is to have a good time and who knows maybe everyone will learn a little something as you play. Make sure that you select questions that are appropriate for the players and their education/skill level. Pop some popcorn or bring on a few snacks and have a blast. I know in my house we do!

Aambassador's mom: 'He was trying to do something much bigger'

Ben Curtis / AP file

U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens, pictured here in April when he was a U.S. envoy, attends meetings at the Tibesty Hotel where an African Union delegation was meeting with opposition leaders in Benghazi, Libya. His mother remembered him for his toothy grin and love of meeting people and hearing their stories.

By Lisa Fernandez, NBCBayArea.com

When Chris Stevens was in high school, he would regularly chat with an Iraqi neighbor, who happened to be a State Department retiree. They discussed his job, the work, politics and even mundane neighborhood details, like gardening. Really, just about everything.

It wasn't unusual:?Stevens was often out in the neighborhood. He liked to run or play tennis and enjoyed striking up conversations with strangers and learning their life stories. It was then that his neighbor nicknamed the affable teen, ?ambassador.?

Perhaps the neighbor was clairvoyant. But for those who knew him, it wasn't hard to picture.

Thirty years later, Stevens, 52, died as the U.S. ambassador to Libya, a job he had been promoted to in May following a two-decade career in the U.S. Foreign Service. He, along with three other embassy workers, were killed on Sept. 11 during what the White House is now calling a terrorist attack. He was the first U.S. ambassador to be killed since 1979.

Read the original story at NBCBayArea.com

On Thursday, Stevens? mother, Mary Commanday, 75, and his stepfather, Robert Commanday, 90, sat down with NBC Bay Area during their first on-camera interview at their Oakland home. The Commandays, who have been together 36 years, shared their memories of a diplomat the world has come to know as a man with a human touch, a toothy grin and a passion for the people he worked with in the Middle East.

?He was trying to do something much bigger. His death was about America's relationship with other countries,"?said Mary Commanday, a retired Marin Symphony cellist.

His parents have been touched by the outpouring of respect for a man whom many felt represented trust and democracy. The Commandays have more than 100 letters in a box at home from people wishing them well. They said that the U.S. Ambassador in Moscow held a vigil for Stevens, an old friend. Musicians in Frankfurt and Bremen, Germany held a concert in honor of him, the Commandays said.

And on the night after her son?s death, President Barack Obama called them. Mary Commanday said friends and family were over when someone called out: The president was on the phone.

?I stood up and got up from the couch,? Mary Commanday said. ?I thought that was probably the right thing to do.?

She recalled hearing the president?s voice, which ?sounded just like it does on TV,? and that he expressed his condolences. She can?t remember much of what else he said.

?I wasn?t in a state to talk,? she said. ?But I wasn?t surprised. Chris was doing a job that was important to the president.?

It was a job that in many ways was a natural fit.?

?He was born smiling,? said Robert Commanday, a former music critic for the San Francisco Chronicle. ?He never stopped.?

Robert Commanday recalled Stevens? easily striking up conversations with their late neighbor, Joe Katosh, the Iraqi neighbor who dubbed his stepson ?Ambassadaor.?

?In 20 minutes, Chris would meet someone and know their whole life story,? Robert Commanday said.

Stevens was a student at Piedmont High School at the time, and was quick to embrace all people.

His mother suggested he try out for the American Foreign Service, a club that propelled him to do a Spain homestay. In Spain, he became interested in the culture clash between the Spanish and the Basques.

Stevens studied history at the University of California in Berkeley, graduating in 1982. Then two years in the Peace Corps, where he learned Berber, a North African language, followed seven years later by a law degree at UC Hastings in San Francisco. Along the way, Stevens learned Spanish, French, Italian, Arabic.

He landed at a job at the prestigious Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro law firm in San Francisco, where he worked in international trade law. The firm moved him to D.C. where, in the 1990s, he transitioned from corporate law to government work.

No one can pinpoint exactly when Stevens decided to become a foreign diplomat. But they say he took after his grandfather, Elmer Ellsworth Stevens, a beloved, congenial man in Grass Valley, Calif., encouraged by many to run for State Assembly, the Commandays said, but who declined to remain a high school civics teacher.

The Commandays learned of Stevens? death while vacationing in Yosemite. The State Department couldn?t reach them, so their daughter, Anne, 49, a pediatric rheumatologist in Seattle, called to tell them he died. The couple took a train to come home to meet their youngest son, Tom, 47, an assistant U.S. Attorney in San Francisco. They all flew to a service held at the Air Force base in Maryland, where Stevens? father, Jan Stevens, a retired California assistant attorney general who lives in Loomis, Calif., also attended.

While Chris Stevens had many ?lady friends,? his mother said, including women in other countries whose mothers baked him casseroles, he never married or had children.

The Commandays have no anger toward the Libyan people over Stevens? death, and they remarked at how many Muslims and Arabs have written letters voicing their sadness. The couple said that the largest number of condolence cards that have come into the State Department are from Palestinians, people that Stevens knew when he was stationed in Jerusalem working mostly in the West Bank.

One such person is ?Ibrahim,? who wrote in on www.rememberingchrisstevens.com, set up by his sister and some friends. Ibrahim, who said he worked for the U.S. Consulate General, wrote that he refused to believe that his friend was gone, and that he longed to have a ?social cigarette? with his pal.

The Commandays have refused to watch the ?Innocence of Muslims,? an amateur trailer mocking the Prophet Muhammad, which is what some speculate may have sparked the ire of some Libyans, and now Muslims across the world.

For now, the Commandays are finding a bit of solace in the fact that despite a pocket of horrific violence, Stevens? death has become a turning point for hope and peace. As a mother, Mary Commanday said she can?t dwell in sadness, that she must be proud of her son and his work.

?How can anyone place blame for his death?? Mary Commanday said. ?These were circumstances beyond our government?s control. I am perfectly aware that there was danger. But he was a grown man, well-educated and careful. I knew he was out there doing good work. And as a mother, I had to make up my mind to be fine with it.?

Wayne Watson, who just won a $7 million lawsuit, explains how a bag of popcorn would "whoof" when opened, releasing steam and flavor.

A federal court has awarded a Denver man $7.2 million in a lawsuit he filed against a popcorn maker and a grocery store for selling him microwaved popcorn that made him sick.

According to ABC News, furniture salesman Wayne Watson developed respiratory problems known as "popcorn lung" in 2007 after eating about two bags of popcorn every day for 10 years. "I probably look like a fairly healthy guy, but I only have, on a good day, about 53 percent lung capacity," Watson tells ABC.

The defendants in the case were Glister-Mary Lee, which makes popcorn, Kroger and its subsidiary, Dillon Cos. They had argued that Watson's work with carpet cleaning chemicals caused his illness.

?

"At this time we intend to file an appeal of the decision," Kelli McGannon, a spokeswoman for King Soopers, which is owned by Dillon Cos., a subsidiary of Kroger, tells the Denver Post.

Chester, Ill.-based Glister-Mary Lee executives issued a statement to a local TV station that it was evaluating "next steps."

In fact, many companies have been evaluating their "next steps" regarding diacetyl, a chemical used to create that unique dairy flavor ? without actually using any dairy ? in butter-flavored microwave popcorn and other snacks.

The lung problems described by Watson are relatively rare and have generally been limited to workers in the plants who handle the chemical ? but documented case are severe, according to a briefing paper by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. And many manufacturers are phasing diacetyl out for these reasons.

Workers' unions have been calling for an end to its use in food products for years, and a recent study even linked the chemical to an abnormal brain protein associated with Alzheimer's.

However, it's not really known how much exposure to diacetyl is safe. "OSHA does not have permissible exposure limits (PELs) for most flavoring substances, including diacetyl and acetoin [a substitute of diacetyl]," the paper notes.

Stay tuned for more on the science of food additives from us.

Meanwhile, CNBC predicts the recent verdict will spark a rash of future lawsuits.

Is Cheerleading a Sport by Morgan F Turley - Work at Home Topics

September 19th, 2012 Quennell Posted in Affiliate Program Information, Building Your Own Web Site, Click Bank | No Comments ?

Cheerleading, or ?cheer,? as it is known colloquially by its participants, is often maligned as not being a sport. Those who Christian Louboutin Minimi 140mm Sandals Blue partake in cheer, or who follow it closely, argue that it is a sport, and this source of acrimony is one of the most heavily debated topics in the modern sports world. Many people believe that cheer should not be considered a sport, but this narrow point of view fails to fully examine all of the facts.

One common attribute of sports is that they can be played for recreation. Any sport, from football to golf to bowling to tennis, is something that you can either watch professionals on television play or go out and play yourself. In this red bottom shoes regard, cheerleading falls short of the mark. Opportunities to cheer in a recreational setting are few and far between. Rather, most cheer activities are dependent upon another sport: cheering at a high school basketball game when a team scores points, or a routine done at halftime of a football game. This is one point that many people make when asserting that cheer is not a sport. Another gripe that many people have with cheer is that it ?does not have competitions.? This is Christian Louboutin Mickael Flat Sneakers Taupe entirely inaccurate. Many people?s exposure to cheer comes from seeing them on the sidelines during athletic competitions, cheering for their team. The reality is that there are several cheerleading competitions all across the country every year, and there is even a nationally-sanctioned governing body for the sport at the high school level. Some people disregard these competitions because they do not feature head-to-head competition, as in a football or basketball game. The style of competition in cheer, though, is no different than in golf or tennis or track and field, though, wherein several teams are competing against each other to win. Part of the image problem that cheer suffers from, and what makes it such an easy target for those who would malign it, is that the sport does not get very much exposure on a national or even regional scale. One characteristic that is shared by both cheer and other, more established sports such as football and baseball is the prevalence of injuries among participants. In football, concussions, broken limbs, and a whole host of other maladies are entirely possible for participants, and every player goes into every game knowing that there is a risk that he will end up being carted off the field on a gurney. These injuries are a part of the public consciousness about football.

Because cheer is so underexposed, the general public is unaware of the abundance of injuries that Christian Louboutin No.299 Trash 150mm Watersnake Sandals Multicolor can result from cheer. Because bodies are often being thrown or are doing flips or turns in mid-air, the potential for injury is just as great, if not greater, than in a more ?traditional? sport, such as football. Indeed, one of the sports with the fastest-increasing injury rate in the United States is cheerleading. Because of a lack of knowledge amongst the general public about the characteristics and requirements of cheer, some people continue to accuse it of not being a sport, and will likely continue to do so until they become more educated about it.

Panetta urges China to increase military contacts to avoid missteps

BEIJING (Reuters) - U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta urged China on Tuesday to allow closer military contacts to reduce the risk of confrontation, as the two powers grapple with a volatile territorial dispute between Beijing and Tokyo.

Panetta's trip to Beijing for talks with senior Chinese military and government leaders has coincided with an eruption in tension over rival claims by Japan and China to a cluster of islands in the East China Sea.

He told Defence Minister Liang Guanglie that Washington and Beijing should foster closer military contacts and avoid misunderstandings that could spiral into confrontation.

"Our goal is to have the United States and China establish the most important bilateral relationship in the world, and the key to that is to establish a strong military-to-military relationship," Panetta said in opening remarks that reporters were allowed to observe.

Pentagon officials have long complained that China has not been candid enough about its rapid military build-up, whereas Chinese officials have accused Washington of viewing their country in suspicious, "Cold War" terms.

"The key is to have senior level actions like we are engaging in that reduce the potential for miscalculation, that foster greater understanding and that expand trust between our two countries," Panetta said.

Over past days, anti-Japan protests have erupted across China, including attacks on Japanese cars and restaurants.

They were triggered by anger over Japan's decision last week to buy a tiny group of disputed islands - which Tokyo calls Senkaku and Beijing calls Diaoyu - from a private Japanese owner.

In the initial remarks open to reporters, Panetta did not mention that dispute. Instead, he stressed a positive message that the United States and China share common ground on regional issues.

"China is a Pacific power and so is the United States and we share common concerns in this region," he said. "Concerns related to terrorism, to nuclear proliferation, to humanitarian relief, to drug trafficking, peace keeping and other issues."

In Tokyo on Monday, however, Panetta expressed concern about the mounting tensions between Beijing and Tokyo, and urged calm and restraint.

The Japanese government has said that Tokyo and Washington agree that the disputed islands are covered by a U.S.-Japan security treaty. Panetta said that while his government stood by its obligations under the treaty with Japan, it did not take any side over who had sovereignty over the islands.

China has said Washington should not become involved in the quarrel. "We hope that the U.S. will truly abide by the principle of not taking sides over the question of who the Diaoyu islands belong to," the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a daily briefing on Monday.

New research could provide new insights into tuberculosis and other diseases

ScienceDaily (Sep. 18, 2012) ? Researchers Patricia A. Champion and Matthew Champion from the University of Notre Dame's Eck Institute for Global Health have developed a method to directly detect bacterial protein secretion, which could provide new insights into a variety of diseases including tuberculosis.

The Champions point out that bacteria use a variety of secretion systems to transport proteins beyond their cell membranes in order to interact with their environment. For bacterial pathogens such as TB, these systems transport bacterial proteins that promote interaction with host cells, leading to virulent disease.

Previously, researchers have relied on methods that have fused enzymes or fluorescent markers to bacterial proteins to identify bacterial genes that are used to export bacterial proteins into host cells. However, these methods can't be used in the analysis of all bacterial secretion systems, which has limited understanding of the mechanisms that bacteria use to interact with host cells.

The Champions developed a modified form of bacterial proteomics using a MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer, which directly detects the proteins from whole colonies by ionizing them with a laser. This research revealed that the method was able to specifically monitor a specialized form of protein secretion, which is a major virulence determinant in both mycobacterial pathogens, such as TB, and Gram-positive pathogens, such as Bacillus and Staphylococcus species.

The Champions demonstrated that this new method is applicable to the study of other bacterial protein export systems that could not be effectively studied under previous methods. Their method could also help in the identification of compounds that can inhibit bacterial protein secretion.

The method's importance can be seen in the fact that there are approximately 2 million fatal TB cases each year, mostly in the developing world. Also, antibiotic-resistant strains of TB are appearing increasingly.

The Champions' research findings appeared in the journal Molecular and Cellular Proteomics. The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health and Notre Dame's Center for Rare and Neglected Diseases as well as capitalization funds from Notre Dame.

French court to rule Tuesday on UK royal photos

NANTERRE, France (AP) ? A French court will rule Tuesday on a request by a lawyer for Prince William and his wife Kate to block further publication of topless photos of the Duchess of Cambridge taken while the couple shared what he described as a deeply intimate moment on holiday.

The court in Nanterre, outside Paris, has said it will announce its ruling at noon as to whether it will to stop popular French gossip magazine Closer from reproducing the images.

The royal couple's lawyer, Aurelien Hamelle, said Monday that they were sharing a "healthy and profoundly intimate" moment when a photographer took the images. The situation was "deeply personal," he added.

Closer published 14 of the photos of a partially clad Kate in its pages on Friday. On Monday, Italian magazine Chi published a 26-page spread of the images. Chi, like Closer, is part of the Italian publishing house Mondador, owned by former Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi.

Irish tabloid the Irish Daily Star published more topless photos of Kate over the weekend. The editor has since been suspended, and Ireland's justice minister said Monday that he would revise privacy laws in the country.

Hamelle told the court that he is seeking ?5,000 ($6,550) in damages from Closer and an injunction forcing the magazine to stop publication elsewhere, including on the Internet. He also asked the court to fine Closer ?10,000 ($13,100) a day for each day the injunction is not respected, and ?100,000 ($131,000) if the photos are sold in France or abroad.

The photos in question show the Duchess of Cambridge relaxing during a holiday at a private villa in Provence, in southern France, sometimes without her bathing suit top and, in one case, her suit bottom partially pulled down to apply sun screen.

William's St. James's Palace called the publications of the photos a "grotesque" invasion of the couple's privacy.

The case centers in part on just how private the villa was and whether, in effect, Kate was to some extent flaunting herself.

"It's not an accessible (view) from the exterior," Hamelle said of the site ? a point contested by Closer's lawyer, Delphine Pando who said the site is visible from a nearby road.

"What is certain for her (Kate's) close family as for herself is that it's something extremely troubling," Hamelle said.

Pando, the lawyer for Closer, asked the court to throw out the royal demand, arguing that the rights to the photos belong to an agency ? which sold their use to Closer. She did not give the price.

"We are not the owners of these photos," she said. "The photos are out there. If a TV show wants to show an image of this (magazine) edition, it's got nothing to do with us."

That argument echoed the stance of the editor of Chi, the Italian magazine. Alfonso Signorini told The Associated Press over the weekend that he didn't fear legal action since the photos are already in the public domain following Closer's publication.

The case is but the first of two legal actions by the royals. In a reflection of just how intent they are on protecting their privacy ? and likely dissuading paparazzi from future ventures, St. James's Palace said Sunday the family lawyers would file a criminal complaint.

The Sipa news agency reported that the Nanterre prosecutor's office opened a preliminary investigation on Monday for breach of privacy, receiving and complicity. While no one was named, it would appear to cover the photographer or photographers involved in the case and possibly Closer. The palace said it would be up to French prosecutors to decide whether to investigate and pursue a criminal case for breach of privacy or trespassing.

That second judicial action was not mentioned in Monday's proceedings, and there was no mention of the name of the photographer or photographers who took the offending pictures. There was only reference to an "agency."

Meanwhile, in Ireland, Justice Minister Alan Shatter said Monday that the country planned to introduce new privacy laws after the Irish Daily Star newspaper published the topless photographs of the princess.

"It is clear that some sections of the print media are either unable or unwilling in their reportage to distinguish between prurient interest and the public interest," said Shatter.

"Sections of the print media believe that public figures are fair game and have no right to privacy in respect of any aspect of their lives," Shatter added.

Independent Star, the company which owns the Irish Daily Star, said Monday that Michael O'Kane had been suspended as editor and an internal inquiry had been launched.

The newspaper printed some of the photographs on Saturday in editions available in Ireland, but not inside the U.K.

PHOTOS?|?VIDEO?|?RAW EXCLUSIVES

BRIDGEPORT, Conn.?? Raw began only 24 hours after the conclusion to Night of Champions, but the controversial coda to the pay-per-view left a fallout so severe it felt like it had been brewing for years. From the second the opening pyro boomed, the WWE Universe was riled up, hungry for answers as to what the implications of the WWE Championship Match?? a double pinfall draw that saw CM Punk retain his title against John Cena?? would be. Salvation seemingly arrived moments into the show as the opening chords of "Cult of Personality" ripped through the Webster Bank Arena, and who should arrive but ... Paul Heyman.

Far from a glimpse into the future, though, the mad scientist was only on hand to bring vindication to his friend's dubious retention. Heyman wasted no time in summoning WWE referee Chad Patton, who officiated the title contest, to the ring to bring vindication to the double pinfall that left the title in Punk's hands. Heyman produced not only a still photo from the title match, but somehow procured fan-shot footage from a camera phone in the front row of the fateful German suplex that led to the double pinfall. His work seemingly done, Heyman began to extol the virtues of The Second City Saint and took up the champion's cause of demanding respect.

John Cena, however, was having none of it. The Cenation leader, showing no ill effects of the ankle injury he suffered at Night of Champions, stormed down to the ring and shockingly agreed with Patton's decision, but not the "finality" of it. Unable and unwilling to accept that Punk and Cena's roiling rivalry could possibly conclude in a double pinfall (and unwilling to give Punk respect based off of same), Cena offered up a solution: a title rematch later that same night.

Heyman, evoking his status as "The Voice of the Voice of the Voiceless," began to respond until the overture of Alberto Del Rio's music cut him and Cena off mid-sentence. The Essence of Excellence, still flanked by the injured Ricardo Rodriguez, wasted no time in condemning SmackDown General Manager Booker T's reinstatement of the Brogue Kick, and the fact that it (according to Del Rio) cost him the World Heavyweight Championship at Night of Champions. As "the man who never lies," Del Rio demanded that?he?receive a title rematch.

That brought out Raw GM AJ Lee to settle the debate: Eyes wide with the fire of inspiration, AJ declared she'd come up with a "super main event": A tag match pitting WWE Champion CM Punk & Del Rio against World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus & Cena. "And who knows?" she concluded. "Whoever wins will go a long way toward determining if there will be a rematch and who will be in it."
